Learn how to use LockMagic with Live Mesh

A cloud storage system like Google docs, skydrive or Live Mesh is a new way of sharing data among all computers that a user has access to. It is also a way for users to share data with each other by sharing out folders. At this moment, Live Mesh does not give the user a way to encrypt the content that is being shared among users. Since this data has the option to be placed on the Live Mesh Desktop, this means user’s data may be in a datacenter someplace in the world. The user will solely have to rely on the security of the network and datacenter operator to secure this data. Securing your data with LockMagic will ensure that only the people you are sharing your data with will be able to access this data.


This fact becomes even more important when you consider that sometime the only reason people will use live Mesh is to share disk space. In this scenario, since the disk, and not the data is being shared, the main reason to use Mesh is for storing content on someone else’s machine just for backup purposes. Therefore, encrypting the data, so that other Mesh users cannot see the real content is paramount. Encrypting your data with LockMagic really enables this key scenario.


The figure below shows how LockMagic can be used with Live Mesh, Skydrive or Google docs. If all users are using live Ids, then single sign on is possible, and the authentication to the LockMagic Key server will be skipped. If the data is encrypted with another email address, e.g. Gmail, then LockMagic will force an authentication when the data is access. In this case, LockMagic is being used to provide a 2 Factor Authentication.
